They dance, they wave, they stand at attention, they fall. Oak leaves are the seashells of the forest floor.
Oak trees have always fascinated me. Particularly the leaves of white oaks with their undulating contours and forms.
Their relationship to one another and the negative shapes they create form an intricate organic tapestry. Deeply entwined with ancient lore, sacred rituals, and the decorative arts, oak trees are a defining symbol of strength and wisdom.
These works of art evolve from hand made templates of leaves I have collected. I utilize both the positive cutout and the negative result to create depth and dimension. Using an acrylic polymer and marble dust compound and a palette knife I sculpt a fluid abstract of each leaf. The piece is then layered with paint to create an impressionistic forest realm.
This collection expresses my love and gratitude of all things oaken. It’s an exploration of my connection to these forest giants and the treasures they bring… acorns, shade, shelter, furniture, emotions and feelings of awe.
A special thank you to the 400 year old historical tree on Lakeshore Road in Niagara-On-The-Lake and the surrounding ancient oak forests, for whispering the inspiration and providing me with the leaves for this collection that brings the Outside In.
